Lamar Haines Memorial Wildlife Area |  | Description: A window into the past, this old homestead on the south slope of the San Francisco Peaks comprises two springs in a small, scenic mountain meadow. The springs form a small creek and pond which, with large ponderosa pine, fir and aspen trees, provide excellent habitat for migrating songbirds and cavity-nesting birds. Follow the old road to the homestead, which provides easy access to this walk-in viewing area. | |
Wildlife to Watch: Visitors have a good probability of seeing elk and mule deer, Abert’s squirrel, golden-mantled ground squirrel, greater short-horned lizard and plateau lizard. It is also an excellent place to observe mixed-conifer songbirds. Year-round resident birds can include Lewis’s, downy, hairy, and American three-toed woodpeckers; also Steller’s jay, mountain chickadee, red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches, and brown creeper. Additional spring and summer breeding birds include Cordilleran flycatcher, western tanager, dark-eyed junco, and occasionally evening grosbeak and red crossbill. Go early in the day and move quietly for a good chance to see wildlife. |

Other Activities: A rugged, 1 ½ mile trail to the homestead begins at the gate and goe the right; another trail goes straight, following a narrow meadow into the National Forest. |
